Cadrans solaires du fort de Chaudanne à Besançon

Le fort de Chaudanne surplombe le vieux centre de Besançon et fait face à la citadelle. En rénovation depuis plusieurs années, il est interdit au public. Sur le bâtiment principal, on trouve trois cadrans solaires. Le premier et le plus grand est un cadran déclinant de l'aprés-midi, très abimé. De chaque côté du bâtiment se trouvent un cadran polaire (un orienté sud-est, l'autre nord-ouest). Ces cadrans datent de 1844. Ils sont à rapprocher du cadran déclinant de la faculté de médecine, également de 1844 et d'un tracé similaire.

Fort Chaudanne overhangs the old centre of Besançon and faces the citadel. Public access is not allowed as renovation work is in progress. There are three sundials on the main building. The first one is declining towards the afternoon sun and is much damaged. On both sides of the building, are two polar sundials. These sundials date from 1844 and are similar to the declining sundial at the Faculty of Medecine, also from 1844 and of similar construction.

Le riche tracé de ce cadran trés abimé, est peu visible sur une photographie. Pour vous permettre d'en apprécier la richesse, les lignes ont été réhaussées en couleur sur la photo, d'aprés les repères détectés en haute résolution aprés amélioration de l'image. Les lignes de solstice et d'équinoxe sont tracées en rouge, de même que la ligne d'horizon. Elles sont marquées en Français, le long des courbes. Les lignes horaires sont en jaune et sont tracées pour les heures et demi-heures. Les heures sont marquées en chiffres romains en bas du solstice d'été. La courbe en huit est repassée en bleu. De part et d'autre de cette courbe sont marquées les quatre saisons. Le style, probablement un disque troué aujourd'hui disparu, était porté par trois branches dont il n'en subsiste que deux.

Gageons que en vue de la réouverture du site au public, la restauration et l'aménagement des bâtiments s'accompagneront d'une restauration du cadran déclinant, du fait de sa richesse et de sa situation.

The richly drawn sundial is very damaged, and very little is visible on a photo. The lines on the photo have been enhanced with colour following marks detected after high resolution improvement of the image in order to make it possible to enjoy the richness of the drawing. The solstice and equinox lines have been highlighted in red as has the horizon line. They are marked in French along their curves. The hour lines are in yellow and are drawn for the hours and half hours. The hours are indicated in roman numerals below the summer solstice. The figure of eight is highlighted in blue. Parts of this curve are marked with the four seasons. The style, now gone, was probably a pierced disc on three supports, of which only two now remain.

In view of the opening of the site to the public it is a safe bet that the restoration and improvement of the buildings will be accompanied by a restoration of the declining sundial considering it's richness and splendid position.

Les cadrans polaires sont taillés et polis dans de la pierre blanche (marbre ?). Ce type de cadran est assez rare. Il est constitué d'un cylindre orienté parallèlement à l'axe de rotation de la Terre. Les lignes horaires sont parallèles entre-elles. Le style est en général constitué d'une tige placé sur l'axe du cylindre. Sur l'un des deux cadrans le style est absent, sur l'autre il est déformé et ne peut plus fonctionner.

The polar sundials are cut in a polished white stone (maybe marble?). This type of sundial is quitre rare. It is made of a cylinder inclined parallel to the Earth's rotation axis. Hour lines are parallel to each other. The style is usually made of a rod placed at the cylinder axis. Here, on of the sundials has lost its style, the other is twisted and cannot work anymore.
